On 21st February, 1915, the 1st Royal Fusiliers battalion of 17 Brigade, 6th Division, moved into the trenches near Chapelle d’Armentières between the Lille to Boulogne road and the Lille to Armentières railway, where they remained until relieved on 25th February. The battalion diary entry for 21st February recorded that it was a foggy day and that this made the men careless of enemy snipers and this probably explains the death of Rowland Sheppard and two others. |
